Pattern discrimination learning with rhesus monkeys.
نویسنده
چکیده
Rhesus monkeys were trained to criterion on a two-stimulus and a fivestimulus pattern discrimination task. The probabilities of response to the various stimuli throughout learning are examined for individual subjects, and it is fOlL'1d that the subjects exhibit consistency in the order and manner in which incorrect stimuli are eliminated. This suggests a simple mathematical description of the process, which is used to deepen the analysis of the data, permitting estimation of individual learning parameters and construction of more meaningful summaries of the group data. lThis research was supported by USPHS Grants MH-037 32, MH-15:,2l4 HD-009l8-o4 a'1d US Army Contract DA-49-l93-MD 2328.

Excitotoxic lesions of the amygdala fail to produce impairment in visual learning for auditory secondary reinforcement but interfere with reinforcer devaluation effects in rhesus monkeys.
Aspiration lesions of the amygdala were found previously to produce a severe impairment in visual discrimination learning for auditory secondary reinforcement in rhesus monkeys (Gaffan and Harrison, 1987). To determine whether excitotoxic amygdala lesions would also produce this effect, we trained four naive rhesus monkeys on the same task. The monkeys were required to learn 40 new visual discr...
متن کاملImpairments in visual discrimination learning and recognition memory produced by neurotoxic lesions of rhinal cortex in rhesus monkeys.
Much work on the cognitive functions of the primate rhinal (i.e. entorhinal plus perirhinal) cortex has been based on aspiration lesions of this structure, which might disrupt fibres passing nearby and through the rhinal cortex in addition to removing the cell bodies of the rhinal cortex itself. To determine whether damage limited to the cell bodies of the rhinal cortex is sufficient to impair ...
متن کاملPretraining and discrimination reversal learning by rhesus monkeys
Groups of five to seven macaques were trained on repeated reversals of a visual (or spatial) discrimination habitafter no pretraining, extended discrimination training, or repeated reversal training on spatial (or visual) cues. Neither sortof pretraining had a significant effect on reversal learning on the second cue. These results indicate that monkeys' capacity to develop generalized "win-sta...
متن کاملBilateral orbital prefrontal cortex lesions in rhesus monkeys disrupt choices guided by both reward value and reward contingency.
The orbital prefrontal cortex (PFo) operates as part of a network involved in reward-based learning and goal-directed behavior. To test whether the PFo is necessary for guiding behavior based on the value of expected reward outcomes, we compared four rhesus monkeys with two-stage bilateral PFo removals and six unoperated controls for their responses to reinforcer devaluation, a task that assess...
متن کاملRole of basal stress hormones and amygdala dimensions in stress coping strategies of male rhesus monkeys in response to a hazard-reward conflict
Objective(s): In the present study the effect of stress on monkeys that had learned to retrieve food from a five-chamber receptacle, as well as the relationship between their behavior and the serum cortisol and epinephrine levels and relative size of the amygdala was evaluated. Materials and Methods: Six male rhesus monkeys were individually given access to the food reward orderly. They could e...
